NZ 2023 - Timaru to Kaikoura (Day 13 of 33)

Woke up by alarm at 8am because it’s check-out day and I still haven’t packed!! Took my own sweet time and left the place at 9am!! Shiok!! Walked to Caroline Bay to chill for a bit before walking to town to see see look look again!

Reached town and saw a cheap breakfast (not so cheap at NZD$28.56 but still cheaper than most) at a cafe called Timaru Station Cafe so might as well. Thankfully I ate something because the bus rides that follow after were crazy long. 3 hours to Christchurch, and another 3 hours to Kaikoura, with nothing to eat, but plenty to see.

Soon after, the sights of the mountains and plains became sights of the ocean. For the first time in my trip, I got to see seals and sea lions nesting on the shore! Damn cool!

Reaching Kaikoura, the weather was hot and sunny, not a tint of cold wind at all. Super shag because I was sweating like mad. Walked to Dolphin Lodge and I only have one complaint about the place: Only one charging point for 6 pax. Like what the heck.

Rushed out to town to eat dinner before everything closes. Spent NZD$47 on this piece of 400g ribeye that was too raw. Sadded. Eat until want to puke. Then walked 2km to the nearest supermarket, New World. Town is so small that there’s only this one supermarket. Sadded. Got some water and snacks for NZD$17.02.

Headed back to the hostel at 8pm and just tried to waste the night away. 2 hours really can’t go anywhere because the nearest loop takes at least 3 hours and I’m not about to walk back on the highway in the dark. So yeah, moral of the story: Don’t arrive in the evening as much as possible.
